You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves."

-- Abraham Lincoln

This quote by Abraham Lincoln echoes the Chinese Proverb, "give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime."

Just as the Chinese fisherman could and should fish for himself instead of relying on someone else to give him a fish, Lincoln believes the People of the United States could and should do things for themselves instead of relying on the government to do things for them. Obviously the truth of what needs to be done in life can prove to be much stranger and complex compared to the truth of what needs to be done while fishing. However, physical, mental and moral strength allow for the things that need to be taken care of in life to be done with greater ease and a more peaceful disposition.
